![]() The CloudFS driver will benefit partners and their ecosystems by providing: Potential uses for the driver range from handsets that offer iCloud-like backup and transfer capabilities, to small IoT devices with no local storage running applications directly from the cloud, and hybrid servers created to manage elastic capacity requirements. This allows a user’s entire digital life to be kept organized and accessible across any device regardless of local storage constraints. The new CloudFS driver is able to securely store all data types, including media, apps, contacts, and settings, by embedding the cloud at the OS level. “Our new CloudFS driver is the first step towards a platform that enables any developer to add the cloud as a ubiquitous setting in their hardware or software solution.” “Unlocking the true potential of connected devices requires an end to the dependency on local storage,” said Brian Taptich, CEO of Bitcasa. Integration is as easy as adding a local drive. Made possible by Bitcasa’s virtual drive architecture, which uses the cloud as primary storage as opposed to a sync mechanism, the new software allows partners with Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) compliant file systems and local caching requirements to natively cloud-enable devices. ![]() ![]() 29, 2016 - // - Bitcasa, the cloud drive for the device economy, today announced the new CloudFS software driver, which allows any device to access cloud storage at the OS level, eliminating the need for local storage. Bitcasa support in UpdraftPlus should thus be considered legacy/deprecated, and we recommend migrating away from it as soon as is convenient.New CloudFS Driver That Enables Native Integration on Any Device Now Available to Qualified Partners for Testing No CloudFS PHP developer kit is yet available. Update: Since writing this blog post, Bitcasa have removed their developer kit from their “personal” product from the Internet, and confirmed that they don’t intend to make it possible to link applications to a personal drive in future. We hope they will make things clearer and fill in their gaps soon – they look like they could really go places if they can sort some of these growing issues out. Will CloudFS be different? At UpdraftPlus, we intend to wait for a while to see before we invest time in supporting it.įor these reasons, if you are currently looking for a cloud storage provider, we recommend not using Bitcasa, and definitely not relying upon future support for Bitcasa in UpdraftPlus. When they did release a developer kit for their “Personal” product, it had no support from them afterwards – it is still available in the same form which it was released in, and bug reports are ignored. This is not very satisfactory, as it is not clear to us whether Bitcasa are intending to phase out their “Personal” product and “CloudFS” is going to take over, or if it’s just one more glitch / badly communicated mistake (there have been a few). Bitcasa are currently giving a lot of attention to their new “CloudFS” product but developer support for this is labelled by them as “beta” (and a toolkit that PHP programmes can use, like WordPress or WordPress plugins, is currently non-existent). This change has not been announced anywhere the buttons have just disappeared. The problem has been continuity, and clear communications with their users.Ĭurrently, it looks like it is not possible to create a new Bitcasa application for your personal Bitcasa drive – which means that you cannot link UpdraftPlus to it. ![]() Obviously, Bitcasa are growing fast, and they keep seeking to launch improved services. The ride since then has been rather bumpy. Back at the start of 2014, Bitcasa cloud storage support was a popular request from our users, and we added support for its platform. ![]()
